How do I handle religion differences in my family?

I am an atheist, and my mom and sibling whom I live with are christians. I have absolutely no hate or bitter feelings towards them because of their beliefs. I don’t understand why they are disapointed in me and think I am pathetic. Why can’t they accept me for who I am?

Just be patient with them; they must be baby Christians and have forgotten that God will ultimately gather all of His own in due course. Just as you are free to believe what you do, God is free to do as He chooses.

In the same way, God is far more complex than we are, and we cannot understand him fully. If we read the book of the Isaiah in the Bible, we find these words in chapter 55, verses 8 and 9, spoken through Isaiah, who was a prophet:

“My thoughts are completely different from yours,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

This means that we can only glimpse a portion of what God is doing in our lives and in the lives of others. There is an inevitable gap in understanding.

I was a die-hard Atheist for years, but one day had my own ‘Road To Damascus’ experience. It was so dramatic that it transformed me inside and out. Almost everyone I knew plus my family became believers without my beating them over the head with anything. It was meant to be. He foreknew me. As it is written …

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

God also Forenew us…Romans 8:29- For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

I can promise you this; if God wants you- He’ll get you, maybe not today, but someday when you least expect it; He’ll just make Himself known to you and then you will have a bigger heart for other believers. You’ll understand that they witness because they love with a love that’s bigger than themselves, that not sharing the gospel truth is a crime against all that is holy and good.

Just be your self and help them understand why you believe what you do. God can take it. He loves a thinking man.

It’s hard for Christians to understand why people don’t believe in God. It hurts us but as your mother she needs to accept you for who you are. Agree that religion shouldn’t be discussed. Just agree to disagree. It will prevent hurt feelings and a lot of arguements.

Answer #3

Many parents want their children to be just like them… go into the family business… follow the family religion… and can’t accept it when a child goes in a different direction.

With christianity, you have the added pressure of a religion that teaches that you will spend eternity in hell if you aren’t christian… you family thinks that is what will happen to you…

lay low, try to avoid discussions on religion and whatever you do, don’t argue with them. Explain your feelings but once the argument starts it is never about the original subject…so keep your cool

Answer #4

everyone sees things differently, we all have different ways of life and different perspectives. thats just life… firstly decide whether or not you are actually athiest or agnostic there is a diffrence. your family will never understand your views on religion but thats because christianity is very judgemental and not very accepting of other beliefs. just avoid religious conversations around your family. you still the same person. doesnt matter what you believe in

Answer #5

Because they don’t understand why you feel that way. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it except to maybe speak to them and tell them why you are not a Christian anymore and that you’d appreciate it if they could respect your decisions.

And xxjohnnyxx, most atheists USED to be Christians…

Answer #6

I don’t think it really matters what they think. but I think you should really try Christianity. It’ll be a nice change and maybe you can get closer with them, and possibly with god too.

Answer #7

because they have CGGP; Christian Goody Goody Persona, (no cure, sorry). I’m sorry to hear this, I hope it works out for you.
