How do I stop creditors from calling me?

I keep getting calls from a creditor that has been given my number bogusly. They keep asking for a person that I don’t know. When I explained to them that they have the wrong number they are rude and basically accuse me of lying to them. I truly do not know this person. How can I make them stop harassing me for someone’s debt that I don’t even know?

Good to know ichi, the idiot who had my phone number previously has hundreds of creditors calling me, I cant be bothered to write a letter to them all, but it’s definitely a good thing to do if one particular creditor keeps calling.

Tell them you want to speak to a supervisor and explain to the supervisor that you are not the person they want…if they refuse to stop calling you, get the name and address of the collections agency and send them a certified cease and desist letter…if you need a letter format, here’s one that should help:

Your name Your Address

Creditor’s Name Creditor’s Address

(date)

Dear (name of collector):

On (date), you or someone from your company contacted me about a debt. I do not believe that I am the person who owes this debt, and I dispute it.

In accordance with Section 809 of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am asking that you provide me, in writing, the following information:

  1. what the money you say I owe is for
  2. the name of the person listed on the debt in question
  3. show me copies of papers where I, (your full name here), agreed to pay what you say I owe
  4. provide me with a copy of a judgment (if applicable)
  5. identify the original creditor
  6. demonstrate that you or your company is licensed in my state, and inform me of the license number.

Please provide this letter to the company for whom you are collecting so that they have notice of my dispute.

Furthermore, please inform any credit reporting agencies to which you’ve reported this debt that it is being disputed. I demand proof that you have done so.

Finally, cease and desist from contacting me in this and any and all related matters, except via United States Mail, and only then to inform me that you are terminating all efforts to collect or that you are taking specific court or legal action.

Sincerely,

(your signature) (your printed name)

Thanks for your response……Trouble is most of them won’t give me any info because I am not who they are looking for which leads me to using caller ID to call the company back and go helter skelter, because even after I tell them I am not who they are looking for and I don’t know the idiot whos running from their responsibility they call again! You can’t block the callers because I have tried, they have a way of going around “the blocked call feature”, I can’t avoid the call by not answering, because I myself am handicapped and it may be a family member checking on me. And making a complaint with the phone company as you know is useless! I guess I will just have to let them get the nasty message I have left on my machine perhaps they will leave me alone before i cancel service. Its too bad these big companies don’t have the ability to cross reference or use a search to find social security numbers of their card holders
