Can a person with a drug felony ever become an addiction counselor?
I am living in Montana. I have a drug felony from 2004. I have cleaned up my life and I am getting my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. So far I have a 4.0. I spoke with the state licensing board who said that if I am qualified they have to license me. However, I am wondering if I will still be able to get a job. I did meet counselors who had their own history with addictions, and they seemed to be the best. I wondered if there were any states that were more apt to hire a counselor with a felony than others. Or if anyone is an addiction counselor who has had a felony please reply.
Why not? My personal opinion is a person who has been addicted to drugs in the past would be qualified to be a counselor.Books and training are great learning tools. How ever, unless you have been an addict yourself you will never be able to effectively communicate with an addict.
I think you would probably get more jobs. Because not only have you been through it, but you can help people get on the same track to recovery as you did. I believe people are more willing to open up and share what they have to say, when they can do it with someone they trust knows what they’re talking about. =)
I agree that it should be that way, and that is my dream. I just want to help other people get where I am today. I am also a good student. I am finishing my last two classes of my first year and I have a 4.0. It has also been 6 years since my arrest. It’s just that all the positions that I see advertised for say, “must be able to pass background check,” and that has be worried. I was hoping that someone either had accomplished the same goal or at least knows someone who has.
Honestly, a lot of drug counselors were former addicts. And a lot of addicts have been convicted of stuff. So I’m guessing yes, you can become a counselor. I dont know about state wise, but if you’re able to get your license, odds are you’ll be able to get a job. Why not call up places that deal with drug problems (hospitals, rehabs, half way houses, etc) and find out from them?
