FunAdvice Advice from: leogee http://www.funadvice.com/my/advice/leogee en-us Re: What should I believe in None ! Be a humanist, be yourself. Marvel at and enjoy the wonderful world we live in.Even if we do not fully understand the BIG Bang Theory or Charles Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection, we have no need of the goofy theory that an invisible, unmeasureable bogey man made our world , galaxy,Universe in six days and rested the seventh. We can still feel love, sympathy, have a sense of honour and respect for our fellow creatures and have a sense of good and evil without bringing the superstitious mumbo jumbo of religion into the reckoning. It is inevitable with the spread of education and the advancements of science. Also once people become free to discuss religion without fear of torture or death the truth becomes easier to establish. Only extensive brainwashing during youth, and I include the unintentional brainwashing of growing up completely surrounded by unquestioningly religious adults and contemporaries, or emotional stress which leaves people feeling inadequate and desperately looking for support, can perpetuate the strange superstition of religion. Once people have broken free of it and look at religion from the "outside" most religious beliefs become obviously, hysterically, ridiculous. Did he keep a diary? There were not any humans around to record it -Adam and Eve had not yet been created even according to the Bible. Is carbon dating a fallacy? What are these dinosaur fossils ? Funny the Bible does not mention there being any problems with them in the Garden of Eden. Maybe Adam kept them as pets ? Sure he,or she, exists - in works of fiction. I don't think the theory of evolution rules out the possibilty of there being a few crackpots around. I've read (but don't understand it) that some of the world's most distinguished philosophers(thats not spelled right) say that if you think of some material thing then it automatically exists. Long live Godzilla ! I am now an atheist but it took me many years to reach this point.I would suggest trying to read some of the work of Professor Richard Dawkins such as "The God Delusion".It IS difficult to contradict people who have sincere (even if illogical and based on unsubstantiated myths)beliefs.Just because millions believe something does not mean it is true. They once believed the Earth was flat! leogee Fri, 12 Sep 2008 14:55:13 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/havent_felt_god 529678 Re: What do you have against christians? I'm an atheist.I have nothing "against" Christians in the sense of hating them. I do think they are deluded,as are all believers in a supernatural deity. Unfortunately many Christians,Muslims etc. DO seem to have considerable dislike or even hate for those they consider non-believers I.e. people who do not share their belief. Witness Muslim terrorism,Christian oppression as demonstarted by witch hunts,Spanish Inquisition, persecution of Catholics by Protestants and Muslim Shias by Sunnis etc. etc., My objections are to the imposition of religious "law" or convention on we non-believers. Thankfully in the UK we are dismantling the old Sunday observance laws and seeing the views of the churches of Rome and England reduced to their proper, fringe, importance. I certainly look upon any call to increase religious interference in our everyday life (as with calls for Sharia (?) law) as a step back into the dark ages. When all is said and done ,he admits that he cannot explain the apparent "intelligent design" of the Universe. Why then make the completely illogical invention of an intelligence which is responsible for Creation-God? Still no answer to the old old question "Who created God ?" If there were some "being" we call God , he would be an extremely complex being and the creation of such a complex being from nothing would be an even more unlikely(not to say impossible) occurrence with even longer odds than the ones he quotes. If anyone is going to say God has always existed then they must by the same token be able to conceive that the Universe has also always existed Can bbb give us his pseudo-scientific odds for the birth of God ? As others have said in various replies to his ramblings about the apparently fine-tuned "balance" of planetary orbits etc. They are only there because with all the trillions of cosmic bodies some WILL fall into the certain narrow criteria, those which didn't would not be there - they are elsewhere. At least evolutionary science does not proclaim that the complex life systems we see today were created in six days ! leogee Sat, 05 Apr 2008 13:38:48 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/god_exists_3_the_metamorphosis 298415 Re: Is belief In Jesus necessary for Salvation ? I have just seen miomios assertion that Jesus Christ was a real person. So far as I am aware there is no proof in fact that he ever did exist. We know of Julius Caesar and the Holocaust because of contemporary writings and living people who can bear witness and other things which can be cross-referenced. None of the writings about Jesus were made at the alleged time of his life, nor have any contemporary Roman records of his life and death been found although he was supposed to have had thousands of followers in Israel. His life and miracles (?) are to say the least, extremely doubtful. I do believe researchers though who have made a serious study of writings of the time and who aver there were several preachers roaming the Holy Land at the time all giving similar messages to the alleged Jesus. In a hundred years time maybe people will be worshipping Harry Potter- his miracles have been well-documented and the millions of books about him which have been sold show he MUST be a real person! leogee Fri, 28 Mar 2008 07:40:14 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/is_belief_in_jesus_necessary_for 286018 Re: How to show my friend that God exists? In answer to emilyxoxo : I am not judging anyone "because they believe in God" and I am not aware of any great movement by atheists to force their beliefs on anyone.I believe that people are free to believe whatever they wish, unfortunately the history of organized religions indicates that atheists have not been treated so leniently. The Roman Catholic Church only disbanded the Inquistion in the twentieth century. How many thousands of people were tortured and killed by that Church, acting in the name of that loving, caring God ? Their crime ? Was it not that they disagreed with the Church ? The Church of England also had a pretty bloody record in Tudor days. Other Christian Protestant churches have threatened people with eternal damnation for not conforming with their beliefs. What happens to Muslims who dare to ridicule the teachings of Islam or make a drawing of Mohammed ? Please don't say atheists try to force their beliefs on people. I do not suppose anyone will ever be able to PROVE there is no God, but what we can already say is that the overwhelming probability is that there is not. The arguments for his existence simply do not stand up to analysis and investigation. Most of the "explanations" of the Bible, miracles, human suffering and other religious questions are absolutely hilarious once one is free of blind faith. Faith is after all about the suspension of intelligent thought in favour of superstitious nonsense. By the way, I recently read of a large-scale experiment on the power of prayers which was funded by a Christian foundation and which was conducted under established scientific methods with the participation of large congregations of Christians. The conclusion, after the expenditure of several million dollars, was that they made no difference whatsoever. Why can God not reveal himself ? Why does he want us all to believe in him (I am the Lord your God and you shall have no other God but me) and keep sending his messages to the faithful via nutty evangelistic preachers and megalomaniac priests bishops mullaha etc. and yet keep hidden ? Do not try to show your friends that God exists, leave that to the big boy himself, but you may have to wait a long time. leogee Fri, 28 Mar 2008 07:24:50 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/thank_god 286003 Re: How to show my friend that God exists? How sad that people can still believe in the supernatural God,Jehovah,Allah or whatever you wish to call this mythical being .Please, please, do try to clear your minds of all the religious claptrap with which you have been indoctrinated and start thinking it through for yourselves from scratch. There is NO evidence and I emphasise EVIDENCE (proven facts) to support the theory of existence of a "God". Having taken about fifty years to observe the world and the theological nonsense purveyed to gullible masses before coming to embrace aetheism as opposed to being merely agnostic for many years, I urge you all to really question any of your religious mentors at every turning . Have the courage to challenge the imaginary authority of your priest, mullah, rabbi . If any answer to your questions sounds the least bit dodgy or unsatisfactory then carry on probing and questioning and try looking at the answers given by aetheists to the same questions and compare the probability ,given your own experiences and knowledge of the known worlds,as to which seems more comprehensible. I have only recently become familiar with Professor Richard Dawkins and his fairly militant aetheist beliefs, however he does seem to elucidate all my own rather confused conclusions on the non-existence of this stupid "God". Try reading his best-selling book "The God Delusion." leogee Thu, 27 Mar 2008 14:22:51 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/thank_god 284856 Re: Is belief In Jesus necessary for Salvation ? What a stupid question ! Assuming there were a God,which there obviously isn't, would he condemn to eternal damnation the poor sods who have never heard of the fictional Jesus Christ ? It is highly amusing to aetheists like myself to see that even in the 21st Century people will actually take all this religious superstitious mumbo-jumbo SERIOUSLY !Can they not think for themselves ? leogee Thu, 27 Mar 2008 13:53:40 -0700 http://www.funadvice.com/q/is_belief_in_jesus_necessary_for 284812
