Disneyland is much, much smaller than Disney World. Here are the basic facts: Disneyland Resort Anaheim, CA 2 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, California Adventure) 3 hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier, Grand Californian) Downtown Disney shopping area All of the hotels and theme parks are within 5 minute walk. Walt Disney World Orlando, FL 4 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom) 2 water parks (Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon) 20+ hotels Downtown Disney (3 times larger than Disneyland's version) WDW is spread out over an area the size of Manhattan, and you must use the monorail, buses or cars to get from one place to the next. So -- one is not necessarily better than the other. Disneyland was the only theme park that Walt Disney ever stepped foot in (WDW opened after he died).
