Find the file or folder you want to make an alias or shortcut for.
Control-click (Macintosh) and choose Make Alias from the window that appears.
Drag the shortcut to wherever you want it (in this case, the desktop).
For a website (ie. mail.yahoo.com), drag the icon next to the URL in your browser to your desktop.
