How can "entity" be used in a sentence?

Thunder Robot Asked by funadvice 12 months ago, 4 answers.

What's an example of using the word "entity" in a sentence?

It's a vocab word and I don't understnad any definitions. So maybe if you use it in a simple sentence, I'd get it.

Help is appreciated. Thanks

An entity is something that has a distinct, separate existence, though it need not be a material existence. In particular, abstractions and legal fictions are usually regarded as entities.

Basicly like a soul...

My sentence: "A corporation is a business entity. Other examples of business entities are: LLC (limited liability co), limited partnership, sole proprietorship, etc."

Also, "the Baptist Church is a religous entity consisting of followers of the Protestant faith."

Hope these help a bit.

Say you were to set a business, and all you did was put out a sign and open the doors to your new business, you are a "sole proprietor" and basically you and the business are the same entity, as in people doing business with "ABC Store" are basically doing business with you, personally.

If you open this business as an S Corperation or C Corperation, the business becomes a seperate entity, meaning that business is done with "ABC Inc." and not really with you, you just own it. The reason for doing this is legalities, if the business gets sued, ABC Inc., being a seperate entity, a plaintif can only go after the assets of the Corp. if they win, where ABC Store, you and the store are the same and they can come after your personal assets, ie house, car, savings, etc. Also, being a seperate entity, a Corp. files its own taxes, as if it is it's own person, because it is a seperate entity.

Long explaination but I don't know how else to explain it. I'm sure there is some non-business or non-legal definition, but I'm not sure.
