I'm a huge theatre buff, and not a Wicked fangirl, so I believe I can be relatively objective.
Wicked, as a show, is easily a 7.5 out of 10. It's entertaining, and that's about it. No depth, just mindless mediocrity.
As an adaptation of a brilliant, deep political novel, it's about a 3 out of 10.
The score is about 4.5.
The book is a 6.5
Really, it depends on costumes and effects to make the show great-- otherwise it's mediocre. The only people who seem to think Wicked is like OMG THE BEXT THING EVAR are the rabid fangirls.
Even many critics wanted to hang themselves after Wicked. They would say I'm being generous.
And as far as the original cast goes, someone has to tell Idina Menzel to
A. Stop yelling, and maybe start singing, and
B. STOP SMOKING, it doesn't help.
I feel I also have to add a few things, looking at my answer...
if you are a big fan of the book, then you're going to be disappointed with the show...because the show isn't anything like the book...
The music is outstanding...I don't think I was ever bored at any point watching the show...
it's one of the few shows I cried during...it takes a lot to get the tear ducts working for me, cause I'm pretty good at separating myself from it all while watching a play...however this show sucked me in right away...
lastly...you have to judge it for yourself...if you like seeing stories told from a odd point of veiw, out of this world costumes and fantastic vocals then its the play for you...if you enjoy more grounded shows, then you might not like this play...
I went into the show thinking I was going to be bored out of my mind, despite the rave reveiws I read about it...I'm not a person easily swayed...but this show picked me up and swept me right along for the ride...and by the end of it I was cheering and screaming and crying all at once...
Every single guy I went with, including my boyfriend, his father, two of my younger male cousins and our uncle stood up and were cheering and had wet eyes after it too...so it's not as: atthisvelocity suggests; a play that only fangirls like.
it is a truly moving show.
but you be the judge. go watch it. listen to Defying Gravity and For Good. if you're not moved by it, then maybe its not the play for you...
sorry if this is long, but Wicked is one of the few, very few plays I'm passionate about...
