if she's been in any type of accident recently she could have bruised her ribs.. I don't know how long its been bothering her, but, she may have slept wrong one night and strained a muscle in her abdomen?.. she may have over-exerted herself during some activity..

It's probablye from stress. I get pains in my chest when I am stressed and have had rib pains. It feels like this sharp shooting pain and then struggling to breathe sometimes. I would still suggest she sees a doctor though.

I have ehlers danlos syndrom as well as floating rib syndrom. Both of these cause rib pain. It feels almost like the ribs are poking into the lungs. She could very well have floating rib syndrom. EDS is very rare but if she has a lot of the symptoms then she could have that too.
