Well, metabolisms usually slow down when you're older, you never really know when it's going to hit, unless you're one of those people that have the new skinny gene they discovered today. Anyways, you can't make it go faster. Just try to start exercising and eat healthier.

If you build up your lean body mass (aka, muscle) your body will naturally burn more calories, even at rest while sleeping or sitting.

So that's the only way you can increase your metabolic rate, eg, gain muscle through exercise.

To boost your metabolism you need to eat at least 1,000 calories or your body will go into starvation mode, hoarding each calorie it does get. Too low calorie intake slows your metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight. A small reduction like 10-15% in calories is going to protect lean muscle and less likey to slow metabolism. Here a couple of tips, make sure you eat breakfast, with 8 oz of water and some complex carbs, like lettuce, tomatoes, oat bran bread, oatmeal, wild or brown rice, multigrain bread, pinto beans, yogurt, skim milk, grapes, apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges. Eat protein with every meal, (3 oz), such as fish, skinless chicken, turkey breast, loin, eggs, tofu. For snacks, eat fruits and veggies, whole grain cereal, brown rice, Your metabolism increases everytime you eat, samller meals/portions is the key. These are also a couple of spices that are considered thermogenic foods, they raise you metabolism, add these to your meals- cayenne pepper, salsa, hot peppers, tabasco, mustard or chili sauce, also, green tea, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, berries, fatty fish and oatmeal. Ice cold water 8 - (16 oz.) glasses of very cold water a day!!!
