Why is my dog barking at people he knows?

I have a very friendly 6 yr old catahoula. We raised him from a puppy. He is a well socialized farm dog who spends a lot of time with a lot of people and other animals. He even sleeps with the cat and eats with the chickens. Recently he has started...

barking at people in the family when they are at a distance (like 20 feet away, at the end of the driveway, etc) . When he gets closer or we speak to him he stops and wags his tail. He seems embarassed. Could he be going blind? What would cause blindness in a young healthy dog? I am going to make a vet appointment soon. Any suggestions for what I should ask?
