I find the more disturbing part of el ricardo's post to be the insinuation that we atheists don't care for and try to help others. Since we do not typically belong to any kind of church or social club exclusive to atheists, it makes sense that you won't see us waving big banners announcing our aid. Most of us prefer to give quietly and will gladly help our neighbor if s/he needs it.
Besides, when an atheist group does try to do something in public, we are usually met with hostility by everyone else. That's isn't much incentive to get out and make our deeds known.
uhm well nothing happened, and I do know about christianity, I simply dont believe that God had a son...
I think most atheists just aren't sure what to believe yet or aren't completely educated about all religions, they just haven't found the right path. Some I know of just don't 100% believe one religion and believe different parts of several religions at once. And thats completely okay, because I'm sure one day they will discover something.
I believe he existed, and his teaching were extremely misinterpretted.
The simple answer is, because the idea is obviously a preposterous fiction/myth/legend, supported by nothing credible and relevant whatsoever.
Why don't you believe in Spider Man?
Well, I have a good reason to believe there is no God (or Jesus). Even if there is. You tell me why there's suffering in the world. Sure, a lot of people think of suffering as being in 3rd world countries where there;s famin (there's no food) and babies and children are going hungry and have horrible diseases and that doesn't affect us because we live in America. Let me tell you, there is suffering here too. I have found that it's mostly the fortunate ones that believe in God or the less fortunate who can't handle their problems and are in denial.
I saw a picture on this website and it was of a child (about 6-8 months old.) He was nothing but skin and bone and you couldn't even see his legs, if he had any they were up underneath him. In the hot sun, he was crawling to get food which was about 100 meters (not sure about distance). Behind him was a Vulcher, ready to attack.
I wondered why the photographer didn't help by, maybe, bringing him some food and water. I guess the photographer was still asking himself that same question when, a couple of months later, he commited suicide. Do you think he believed in God?
I'm laying in my bed right now as I type on my computer. It is about the only thing that I have left to do. I am hooked to oxygen that I use 24 hrs a day. I live in a small apt and I can barely go from my bedroom to the bathroom. I have severe COPD (Emphysema) and, no, I didn't get it from smoking. I got it from radiation that I received when I had Cancer the first time. I had chemotherapy the second time. The only time I can go outside is when I have to go to the doctor.
I live a block from the beach and can't even go there. It's been about 5 years since I've been able to walk on the beach, but I see people walking there, from my window. I am allergic to Pollen and almost everything else. It would take several hours to sit here and type to you to tell you all the other illnesses and problems I have but I don't have the strength
If you have any questions, you can write to me. One more thing...my son, who is 37 is disabled too and he has to take care of me because the system doesn't work for people like us and we can't get help. That's one of the reasons that I don't believe in God. Plus, I just think it's a crutch that people use when they can't handle their own problems.
Here's a picture of my cat, who, recently had a virus and now is blind in one eye. If that wasn't enough, he is now limping on one leg. He's a real trooper and is still trying to live, just like my son and I. Actually, he is a stray cat. We're not allowed to have a pet so when we give him his medicine and keep him inside out of the elements, we have to sneak and do it. Is that enough to make you a non-believer or am I going to have to write a book?
And one more thing...toadaly said it pretty good, actually but I just want to add that I think that God (or Jesus) is as believable as Santa Claus and was made up to make people behave. Cause if you don't behave, you won't get toys (if you don't believe, you'll go to Hell).
To me, believing in religion is like believing in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. To me, religion is pointless. What is the point?
I used to believe, but sumthin happened, and I just turned my back on religion
I'm a realist...I don't need religion and for me personally I believe it's a waste of time or a crutch for people who have a hard time believe that we are born and live a pretty useless live and then we die and we are no more...end game. I don't think most people can handle that notion so they turn to religion or they are brought up on it.
I have never believed in god like others, I dont beieve there is one, with all the pain and suffering in the world, all the matryrs that have died for a lost cause...I chose not to be brainwashed, I would never believe one person (and a man) was responsible for creating everything and everyone its logically impossible and stupid.
I could write a list of reasons just like those above but I'd rather keep things simple. I don't believe in a supernatural Jesus for the same reason that you don't believe in the divinity of Zeus, Thor, Aphrodite, or any other of the multitude of pagan gods. No matter how many books have been written about them, no matter how many people have had personal experiences with these gods, there's just no proof that they were or are now real.
I think the majority of atheists and agnostics were brought up with or at least exposed to different religions. most had the 'religion' of their childhood (fun little bible stories, games, songs) but through personal growth, experience, education and maturity they have come to realize that religion is based on a myth of guilt and fear. the lack of tangible evidence is a huge obstacle to the thinker. most prefer to rely on their own strength and intelligence to get through life instead of relying on a mythical being that will allow horrible suffering here on earth and then send you to hell.
katwoman, I'm just going to tell you truth, I read your post, and I wanted to cry, all that stuff that happened to you is really saddening. but, I bet if you trusted in God/Jesus through this, you'd be doing better. we are supposed to trust God in the hardest times of our lives, so that He can help us get through it, but if we turn away from Him, the situation will not get better. I'm just wondering, but how many atheists are trying to help feed starving children? because type in helping starving children in google, and tell me how many atheist groups are actually helping them, I see lots of Christian groups trying to help. why is that? (not to single out katwoman)I hear the 'why would God let tragedies like this happen...' a lot, and it is usually atheists that say it, they say it in defense of atheism trying to show that christianity is wrong, but do you ever hear of athiests doing something for them? no.at least I don't .
Until I was 12 I believed all the basic tenets of Christianity but at 12 I tried to look at it objectively. For a tough couple of weeks I vascilated between thinking that Christianity was absurd and praying as hard as I could for God to forgive me for my lack fo faith. The more I really thought about it the less likely Christianity seemed to be so I ended up atheist.

maybe atheists don't like to 'blow their own horn' about the good they perform.
to say that christians are helping people and atheists are not is a ridiculous, arrogant, ignorant, judgmental statement. and statements such as that don't help your argument. I also find it telling that you only mention that christians are helping, you completely discount any other religions.
why in the world would I want to be part of a group that considers itself so much better than others?
'I read your post, and I wanted to cry, all that stuff that happened to you is really saddening. but, I bet if you trusted in God/Jesus through this, you'd be doing better.'
this is your 'christian' help for others? that is your help to katwoman?
casting the blame for her illness on her lack of belief.
so, your 'christian' help is...
you are doing this to yourself, if you believed, you would be better.
and you wonder why no atheists and agnostics are lining up to join your 'cult of ego'.
I recently read a quote that I like...
religion is opium for the masses
amoeba... I don't think that was the point that was trying to be made to katwoman, what was said is that it's easier when you have someone to lean on.
okay, I will apologize for that statement about atheists(not like any one cares that I'm apologizing anyway), I'm just tired of God being blamed for starving children and natural disasters. There prob. are many religious groups that help things like that, and not just Christians. I'm sorry katwoman if I've offended you. I want to clear something up, though, I NEVER said it was katwoman's lack of belief that caused the illness, I said if she still believed, she would be doing better(if you can assume I meant physically, then you're wrong, because I didn't mean it)I ,meant she could be happy for the things she has(not that it's easy), but I believe that God is allowing her to see the cat, because, it seems like she's been helping the cat for a while, so it's not just a coincidence that she hasn't gotten in trouble for it. but I know someone's going to say something about what I said, so say what you want, because I won't post on this particular topic n/e more(now you can celebrate).

I find it interesting that you did not address the rest of el ricardo's post...
or do you feel that only christians are capable of trying to help others?
el ricardo 777 -
if you dish it out, you should be prepared to take it.
when you make such broad sweeping statements, you are going to get response.
if you feel that strongly about your beliefs, good for you.
just don't expect everyone to pat you on the back.

Why dont you believe in jesus?
there are many athiests and such out there, and I just want to know:
why dont YOU believe in Jesus? did something happen, or do you not know?
