Seriously, it's like the creator's of the entertainment for our children don't expect them to think. A friend of mine has a black belt in ninjitsu...and he has a black gei. So, why don't the TMNT have a proper gei? Splinter wears a robe, which isn't traditional, but at least he has some clothing on.
I've never seen a self respecting ninja running around in a loin cloth and a headband. But I've never seen a turtle be a ninja either. Except on TMNT, where I've seen both. Perhaps, because they aren't human, they do not feel the need to wear the robes, or feel they shouldn't? Or, feel that if they did, because of their body shape it would look far too comical, and their enemies and opponents wouldn't take them seriously?
Oh, and just to add fuel to the fire... Raphael is the best Ninja Turtle by far

Why don't the teenage mutant ninja turtles have real costumes?
My wife just pointed out the most amazing thing: the teenage mutant ninja turtles don't wear the full gei (uniform) of a black belt in ninjitsu or ninja. They wear a headband, and that's it. Have you ever seen a self respecting ninja running around in...
a loin cloth and a headband? Nope, and neither have I.
So, why is TMNT so unrealistic? Is it because they don't expect us to think about the show while we watch Leo bust heads with his katana? Or is it because it'd be too hard to tell they are turtles for the audience if they wore the full ninja costume?
