Well you should wash it thoroughly everyday, however if you do and the smell is still there, you should get it checked out by a doctor ASAP especially if there is discharge as well because it could be something serious.

Seriously, a lot of times the odor is based upon your diet.
If you are ingesting a lot of fish, then there can be a fishy smell.
Usually before, during and after your period, there will be an odor.
If you are having a smelly discharge, then it is probably a yeast
infection and you will want to get this verified by your doctor.

You could have a number of problems, not neccessarily an STD, but there are other types of vaginal infections that can cause an odor. Also someone already said what you eat that definately will effect your overall health and cause an odor. There are over-the-counter medicines that you can try first if you want to before you go see a doctor.

You asked why does your vagina smell? What does it smell like? Does it smell bad, or does it just have an odor. Is it a strong odor? True that is it, what you eat affect all parts of your body, even your vagina. However, if you are experiencing a "fishy" odor down there, this NOT due to eating a lot of fish. It is, as someone has already explained, a symptom of one of the common infections women can get that are NOT transmitted through sexual intercourse. These ifnections fall under a broad term known as bacteria vaginosis. There are good bacteria in your vagina and sometimes an overgrowth of these can cause common infections, the most common being the yeast infection. A yeast infection causes itching and usually red inflammed areas around the outside of your vagina. A white discharge is usually present with a yeast infection. As some others have said, when you are close to starting your menstrual cycle, the "normal" scent of your vagina, which is usually barely noticable, will become a bit more pronnounced. As during pregnancy the scent of your vagina will become stronger. Wash yourself thouroughly everyday. Do not douche, this actually washes out good bacteria inside your vagina that you need in there to keep your vagina healthy. If you are experiencing itching and redness but have never had a yeast infection before, do not use the over the counter products. Go to your doctor first so you know exactly what is going on. Take very good care of your special area and when it doubt, call the doctor.

The vagina is supposed to have a smell to it. However, if you notice your smell is very strong or foul, check with your ob-gyn just in case as that can be a sign of infection.

over washing can also produce a smell because your body will create more ph to fight the soap. It depends on what you are using to wash it. Try not to use too much bar soap, if you shower every day and you are using a large amount of regular bar soap to clean it then you will be causing more odor. There are products that are manufactured specifically for this purpose. Try to use something to clean that is formulated for your vaginal area. Make sure that you are not over washing as well. Most people do not realize that they are creating the smell by washing too much. Good luck and don't listen to the previous answer. I am sure that you shower regularly, that is an ingorant response to this question.
