Why do I feel this way about my best friend?

I have a best friend and he is amazing… When we left high school we only had eachother. Now he’s moving away.. For some reason I feel like when he does leave half my heart will go with him. Im not “in love” with him but I do love him. I don’t know how I will cope without him… I don’t have a strong family and when me and my mom fight I go over there to chill out… How do I get l passed the fact that half my heart belongs to him?

I just went through the same situation last year. I lived in Portland, and when I moved to NYC, I left behind the best friend to end all best friends. More times than we could count, she was the only one there for me, and I was the only one there for her. We shared an apartment for two years, and when I moved, it was to a city with no friends and no family. Loneliness doesn’t begin to describe it.

I wish there was something for me to say like “take up knitting and the pain stops” which will leave you with a soothed soul AND new sweaters, but unfortunately, this is one of those horrid “it gets better with time” situations that seem to pop up a lot in adulthood. Nothing to do but wait.

The one good thing about the situation is that phone calls become much more interesting. When you suddenly find yourself cut off from someone that you used to share everything with, trying to fit everything into a phone call becomes a rapid-fire babble fest.
