Why do black people have to speak slang?

Not all black people speak slangs! I know that for a fact because I'm BLACK. However, I know what you mean its annoying... Another thing I cant stand is when they refer to each other as the 'N word' (grrr)! But yea, I understand what you saying but please don't generalize!

From my experience with my friends, they know how to speak properly. They just choose not to. I will talk with them and they sound educated. Then I hear them talking on the phone or to another black person and the talk ghetto/slang. There are also other influences for example BET or Black Entertainment Television, magazines, movies, music, MTV and the worst peer pressure.

I would like to comment on the statement that you made about 50 Cent. The reason why he sounds the way he sounds, all mumble and grumble is because he was shot in the mouth when someone tried to kill him. Now some of us blacks we feel more comfortable speaking our own language with each other now when it does come down to being professional we speak proper. you may also see that with any other race they speak there own language but can sound very different when it comes to outsiders.

That's their culture, that's their right and we all have to respect those things, as some people speak with heavy accent or ungrammatical english. I'm very certain that there are also things about you that seem unlikeable to many but has anybody ever confronted you about that? Perhaps none. See? Because everyone believes that the individuality of a person or of a race must be respected and valued unless it transgresses the law or threatens the security of the others. Be understanding. Butchering the English language is not part of black people's culture. That's not 'just the way they talk', it's the way they choose to talk. Not all of them talk like that, but why others do I have no clue.

well, it's not only black people, it's EVERY race. and 75% of the people who talk like that, are just doing it because they think it's 'cool' and they want to pretend they are from the 'hood' and that they know whats up. and I don't see why anyone would want to pretend they are from the ghetto, they should be thankful that they AREN'T. it's all just stereotypes.

It's mostly the urban blacks (sometimes Hispanic and even whites.)
Ebonics bothers me sooo much...

But I'm black but I don't speak or understand much Ebonics. Most of the kids in my school say I speak 'white' (which is dumb)... I cam across a girl who just said, 'No, you speak like you have some goddamn sense.' Lol.
And I can see how you say they sound like idiots sometimes, but they'd say stuff about some of the slang terms that whites use are dumb to them. I don't really see anything wrong with them.
It's just something everyone has to get use to so everyone can tolerate each other.

An educated person should never consider the way black people talk as being slang, but see it more as a culture. Ebonics (black english) did not just start recently. Ebonics started slightly before and during slavery, and has continued since then. Black slaves were not allowed to speak their native languages. Also, they were not taught or allowed to learn 'standard' english the way whites were taught.

It's common sense that English was not the native language of Africans. Forcing Africans of different language backgrounds into the same place caused nothing but confusion. Over time, they learned to create new words to help them communicate more efficiently with each other. Also, they created new words to speak in code from the 'white man'. Someone stated earlier that they cannot understand what blacks are saying. Just because you don't understand ebonics, it doens't mean that others don't undestand it. It doesn't matter if millions of people don't understand ebonics. It is a dialect of English that is understood by at least 90% of the black population. It is a cultural language. There are many expressions that I could say to a black person that most white, asian, or other races would either not understand, or would barely grasp the full meaning of it. Whether or not you believe ebonics is a language is your opinion, but I definitely consider it to be a language. In fact, there are even many white PhD linguisticians who consider Ebonics as a language.

As for me, I speak both standard english and Ebonics. Most of my non-black friends do not understand Ebonics. I cannot express myself in Ebonics to many non-black people to the same degree as I can to a black person. Whenever I speak Ebonics to non-blacks, they seem to always ask me to repeat what I said, or are confused on exactly what I am trying to say. Also, they think we mumble. However, this confusion does not occur with other members of my 'African American culture'. Therefore, I mostly speak standard english to non-blacks.

Also, the very last statement I want to make is that there are an 'ENORMOUS' amount of educated blacks who speak Ebonics. Therefore, if you stereotype and assume that all blacks who speak ebonics are uneducated, then you're the one who is uneducated. There are black doctors, judges, lawyers, pilots, and many other black professionals who speak ebonics. Then again, does speaking 'standard english' necessarily indicate that you are intelligent? If you say something unintelligent, it doesn't matter if you said it in Ebonics, or standard english. It was still unintelligent!

What the hell people?!?! are you all serious here? If you travel much then you would know that all people have slang and idioms that are unique to their regions and cultures. There is American slang and east coast slang and valley girl slang, do you think using like in between every word is proper english? how come nobody ever questions that? is ain't and ya'll proper english??? NO!! Please, please, please travel more. I studied language and I speak french, spanish, and latin on an intermediate level and all of those languages including latin have idioms and slang and sayings that lose meanings in translation such is the nature of spoken word. For real people open up some books and stop feeding on everything being fed to you by the media. Black people are not the only people who use slang, and if you traveled you would know that way more of us do not use slang than those of us who do.

I agree with you .I am the pres. of the student body and everyone talks improper. Our english teacher charges 10 cent for each improper language!!!I'm black and I don't speak slang.
