My sister is very very overweight... but that is because she is sick. She was rapped when she was only 9 and it continued until she was 15.. she had a few surgeries also and she is 21 now and still not losing weight. The person ruined her life... they did that... sometimes its not the people who are over weight faults... it is sickness also...
There was actually some programme on tele not so long ago, a little experiment they did. Basically they made people who have a fast metabolism and never put on weight, eat a lot, and surprise surprise, they started to put on weight. So whilst I reckon metabolism plays a part, it's also a case of how many calories you eat (how much you eat). You can eat unhealthy crap and still not put on weight, similarly you can eat healthy foods and put on weight if you eat too much!
Loosing weight is difficult because when we eat fewer calories than we burn our body gets more efficient with every bite we eat to avoid loosing weight. Our bodies don't know we are trying to loose weight, most of human history our food supply was not dependable so we had to survive famines. When we eat less our body goes into starvation mode to make our fat last as long as possible since there was no telling how long a real famine would last.
Our bodies also produce a gnawing hunger when we eat less than we burn. Many people can muster the willpower to resist this hunger for days, weeks, months, or even years but usually it wins out and we gain back the weight we lost. Only about 5% of dieters keep the weight they lost off long term. That is one in 20. Pretty long odds.
Some people today are lucky not to gain weight as quickly as other people. The genes that help them remain slim would make them less likely to survive a food shortage in other times. Fat people are more famine resistant.
