Why are people scared of the dark?

Ok this may be a dumb question and I know that some people are just scared of darkness but why is that so?

because its like losing a sense to some people.
like if you just randomly couldnt see,
anything can happen,
somethin like thattt.

people who r afraid of the dark aren't really afraid of the dark itself, the're afraid of what it might hide. everything you fear could be hidden in the dark waiting for you and you wouldn't know, because you cant see it. as soon as so go in alone, THEY GRAB YOU! lol, seriously, that's why it kinda makes me ansy to be alone in the dark.

its because they loose there sense of sight, and sight, being able to see were they are, whats around them is extreemly important to people
also because they cant see anything, so they dont know whats out there
andthere more likley to get paranoid and think theres something horrible there that they cant see

hmm..well I'm one of those people who are scared of the dark..even know im 16 lol
but it's just a feeling of I don't know what or who is around? cause well I don't live in the safest of area's and I just don't feel safe when it's dark. yeah it's weird but it's just the way some people are. I always have to sleep with even a little bit of light in my room =]

People are scared of things they don't know about. And a lot of things could occur in the dark that you would not be prepared for so when it happens suddenly, it is shocking. Like if I were to be blind, I would freak out every .5 seconds

Emoheart? People have rally weird fears like the fear of naked people. Like the fear is trigered by something that happened to them or just a really wild imagination...Like mine. lol. Like I should tell you this story sometime.

I'm scared of the dark at night I have to have someone in the room if its dark I cant even sleep with the computer on, it's a big one too... I have to have someone else even that sometimes doesn't work so every sense I was 5+ I either stayed up until I just layed down in the light and feel asleep or had the tv on and then it leads to sounds that are scary so I end up sleeping with all the lights in the house on anyways!

im afraid of the dark and I feel it is a rational fear because its not the dark that is creepy its what it could be hiding. usually leaving a tv on helps or even a little light can help. but when I was little (this is why im scared) there was a pedofile/serial killer on the loose and he was near my neighborhood. one day my mom got a call on the phone and suddenly she started crying. I found out later it's because my best friend had been raped,sexually abused,and killed by this person and it was 12:00 when it happened,one of the darkest times of night.
