Why are people racist?

I just dont get it same with sexists I mean seen some women do things even I cant do and any sensible guy knows that women are generally smarter so I just want to ask why?

and people are racist because they are either ignorant (they just dont know better), or they're afraid... stupid, but what can you do...

Some older people are racist because of the things the went through when they were younger. Being discriminated against, called derogatory names, beaten. And its not just African americans either. I believe the newer generations have no excuse for it, with all the recourses and contradictory viewpoints, they can form their own opinions instead of listening to their parents. Though, I can understand why some older people are racist.

but we're not just nitpicking on spelling... a lot of changes are made so that in the future when people are searching for things, it makes it easier for them to find...

it's just the way they are... tho its mainly the old generation... like wow!! when I started dating my boyfriend (who's viet).. the first thing my grandpa asked me, was what race he was!! ahhh!!... it drives me insane!!... I guess they just can't accept that we live in a new and modern generation, where we're open to people with diffrent beliefs and backgrounds!! it's the same thing as gay and lesbian rights - some are aginst it and some don't mind it!! in every situation, you'r gunna have people who are fine with things and some who are not!!

I have no idea why people are racist because I just dont' understand why anyone would be. I think its a lot to do with your environment and how your parents or teachers taught you to think.

Well, I'm old (54). I grew up in the '60's and we were about love and peace...that and the war, but I was against that. I have never been racist.

Maybe you guys were referring to people who are really old, I don't know. I think most of them are gone now. I'm ashamed to admit it, but my grandfather was one of those people and he's been passed away for a long time now. He was part of that older generation and he hated everyone who wasn't the same color or religion or anything that he was. I guess he liked alcoholics and racists.

I don't know what their problem was. It doesn't make any sense to me to hate someone because of the color of their skin or for any other reason. Why should anyone think they are better than anyone else? Yeah, Ignorance, I guess.
