It's because when the sunlight come to earth, when it hits the particles in the air, all the other colors are absorbed by those particles and blue is reflected from them, so that is the color it appears to be.

asdfq is right, everything you see is caused by reflection, which is exactly why water appears blue is because it is a reflection off of the sky. The reflection is mainly from dust (the color brown) and polon (the color yellow) combine the two and you get blue.
