The spleen is an organ that functions to destroy old blood cells and it also holds a small reserve of blood that it can supply to the body when needed.

I have a sister-in-law who had to have a malformed speen removed as a child. This has always been a concern whenever she has had surgery since without the speen she lacks the extra reserve of blood that most people have.

For some odd reason, I thought the spleen was the liver... wow, you can tell I never passed the human bio module in science!

It has a pretty cool name for an organ though. It makes me think of an episode of 'Invader Zim'
