Skyscrapers have always fascinated me - I'm from 'the country' and growing up, the tallest building I saw that wasn't on TV was 5 stories high. Where did skyscrapers come from, and when did they start getting first built? It can't have been that long ago. Can somebody help me out here?

A friend of mine from Chicago said that they are the city credited with the origin of the skyscraper. Something about the great fire of Chicago and when they rebuilt the city, it was in different materials (this was 19th century) and since they had so many people to pack in, they started building the new construction even taller.

Also, the minimum height for a building to be considered a real sky scraper is something like 15 stories, or 150 feet.
