Dear deathisbetterthenlifebytwichy,
The talk should be done earlier than 11-13. Most children get curious around 7 or 8 and begin to ask related questions...this is the time to get started. If you wait too long they hear things from others that appear scary and much of it is untrue. They should know the correct names of body parts before 11 and understand the reproduction system and all it's functions by the time they are teens. It is rather embarrassing when by grade 5 or 6 they are taking health: this includes reproduction and they are one of few who know nothing. Most girls today will start their periods by age 11 or just after and should have full knowledge of what they are going through. Boys need to be well versed in the topic because they are more apt to learn the wrong things from others. So although you've left it rather late, it is never too late to get started. The library will have all the age appropriate into that you need.
Sue...good luck
I was 8 when i was given the talk. if u dont give them the right i dea early, they WILL, i repeat, WILL learn it somewhere else. you need to tell them the basics, (dont be to graphic or it may gross them out.) kids will get the wrong idea about it if u dont explain what it is b4 the media and friends tell them.
It's never to early for the talk, just like talking about drugs or smoking. Your child should defiantly know it before entering high school. I would say that yeah 11-13 years old is fine. I got “the talk” in 5th grade right before my school got together the classes, they separated the genders, in the cafeteria to show a video and answer any questions. In sixth, seventh, and eighth I had to watch what we call “the movie” on both the girls and boys. It’s important to talk with your child so they don’t get the wrong idea or go and do something that will affect them negatively in the future. Good Luck!
