I agree with filletofspam. The best and quickest way to learn a language is to be immersed in it. It requires you out of necessity to learn to understand and to speak the language where as school courses have diffuculty teaching conversation. I would recommend taking some courses in the language of preference and then immersing yourself in a community (whether you have to travel to it or not) where that language is the only one spoken. I did that with spanish. I had the basics of the language behind me, I thought I was doing pretty well learning the language until I actually was forced to use it. It was like learning the language over again, but I did have a solid foundation to fall back on to understand how the sentences are formed, some vocabulary, and a basic understanding of some of the tenses.
Learning a foreign language opens the door to communicating with a whole new world. It is well worth the effort and the frustration.
The quickest way to learn a foreign language is full immersion. Go some place where only the language you are learning will be spoken. Stay there until you know the language. It will be very difficult and frustrating at first but before long you will be able to communicate in the new language when it is your only option.
DIRTY WORDS.
The fastest way to learn a foreign language is by learning the dirty words first. The fact that they are Antisocial, Sinful, Nasty, and Funny makes the brain naturally very eager to learn them and use them and shock people etc. (Even if you never really do it.)
CONVERSATION ONLY.
Never start a language learning to Read and Write and Speak at the same time. SOUNDED WORDS are symbols of the real thing (think of a TREE, for example) .. whereas WRITTEN WORDS are symbols of the SPOKEN WORDS. Children learn to speak before they learn to read or write. A written symbol of a spoken symbol is just TOO MUCH for the human brain to deal with easily.
The advice of filletofspam and aliasajent is right on target. IMMERSION. But remember, the FASTEST way is by getting used to CONVERSING. PRACTICE THE SOUNDS of your new language either with a TAPE or with a NATIVE INFORMANT or, better, at work or play with native speakers.
WHEN YOU ARE READY, start memorsing the Pronouns and Verb paradigms .. then grammatical structrures. It will all have meaning then, once you are a new speaker actually communicating in your broken ___-ish.
Just go to http://www.Squidoo.com/LearnAnotherLanguage/ and review some of the options available. There are quite a few languages available, all of which offer a free 6-day course so you may test it's power. Test the free 6 day courses out and see if they are helpful, and if you retain anything, then you know the program is worth the purchase.
