If there were one best answer, everybody would be doing it and losing weight.
It's very important to understand what you put into your body. Understand the good and the bad. What your body really needs and how many things just fill us up and slow our systems down.
Whole grains are very important. Many people do not get enough. They help clear you out, get the fats out, keep things moving.
Don't eat lots of bread, pasta, cakes, etc. Too much refined carbohydrates (which is basically sugar) is a big problem.
We get addicted to our eating habits. For example: We swear we need dessert after dinner, but we're actually just thirsty and used to sweet after savory.
Your tummy takes 20 minutes to feel what you put into your mouth. So take a few minutes before going for second servings.
Some other tips I can think of: cheese is very fatty and salty. Not to mention expensive.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are always great (unless one has allergies). Eat fresh stuff before heavy foods to clear the way and fill you with the good before you go for the bad.
Cut down on sweet drinks. Any added sugar is bad enough and the high fructose syrup will mess w/your insulin, so leave it all alone. Even real juice is more sugar than we need, so keep that to a minimum. If you're thirsty, your body wants water.
Please get your exercise! Even just a little. A walk every day. Walk to the store or a friends house instead of driving. Some housework is exercise. Get in a silly mood, turn on MTV and try to do ALL of the video dances no matter how ridiculous you feel. That would be either good exercise or a good laugh which are both beneficial to your health.
Finally - lose weight to be healthy, not pretty. Beauty is more about how you feel. So feel good.
Best of luck to you.
