Hm, I don't think you're overreacting at all, the world is different everywhere the further you go the more different it gets, but you could only have so many differences until you start to find similarities, but this is coming from a guy who's lived in the same godforsaken city for nearly 20 years. Although I don't get outta pissacola as often as I'd like I have spent at least a couple days in every state on the bottom of the map, ha ha it's very different from pensacola but even though I'd rather be anywhere else I have friends here that I can't leave, because they need me and until they are better off I have to be here for them. I wish there were more potheads here though it'd be more peaceful and there wouldn't be as many *ssholes around, like me for instance I pretty much smoke everyday, if I don't I become one of them, another *sshole. The graffiti here; however is nice like our beaches, every train is tagged with somthin that looks nice. lol. But yeah it's also a small world and life is short and talk is cheap...
Life goes on no matter where you live, the style just may be a lot different.
Hawaii is a hole lot different then the Main Land ( rest of the USA) people are a lot nicer here it is a lot slower paced. the cluture is very mixed and there is a language ( sub to english ) called pigen most people talk in. It is just different there are not a lot of major crimes everyone shares...Kauai ( one of the islands ) has only one major road...( you can never get lost) It is just different hell going from Kauai to Ohau is a major difference ( I know I just moved islands). Kauai is a lot more laid back.
So I do not think you are over reactting I think that you are just noticing your surroundings better is all.
I do hope that you dont over react now that you have noticed.
By the way places Like japan and Guam are a lot different too. My advise to you is to do some traveling till you find a place that you like. for me it is here in Hawaii. I get the best of borth worlds.
Some people it is Washington or Japan, for my step Mother it is Italy. You never know you may find the perfect place.
Peace

EHEHEHEHE
I live in a town with like only 100 people... so yes California is probably A LOT different than my town... Unless you want 100 snoopy people getting all up in your business... I'd suggest staying with the graffiti... honestly I'd prefer it! lol... Hicks aren't the best kind of people to put up with... =)

What is life like outside of california?
A couple months ago I when't back to illinois to see my grandma and stuff. It wasn't completley different because I used to live in naperville, but when I was a kid my parents moved around like every 6 months to a different state. Now that I've been in...
california for like 6 years its really grown on me to what the world looks like to me like the graffiti, skaters, the way people talk, the bumper stickers on every other car that say f*ck bush or bush is a douchebag, the drugs, and even the teachers are hippies that are potheads too. I'm serious though, no joke. When I go down to los angeles it seems different down there too, but in illinois its kinda scary theres cops everywhere its spotless of graffiti and its just so weird. Maybe its just beacause I live in nor cal.
So tell me is life really different outside of california or am I overreacting
