haha I've heard of this too.. I have some crazy friend who told me all about scientists and the president hding all these secrets from us.. I guess to prevent chaos!! I heard that they found some asteroid thatMIGHT hit the earth on the year of 2012 in some spot near cali???... and will cause all these earthquakes, tsunamis, I don't know crrraaazzzyyy nasty nature stuff that might kill a lot of people... thats just what I've heard!! it kinda freaks me out but I don't know...
The year 2012 is when the Mayan calendar ends. Some say that the Mayan calendar predicted a lot of events, as it is based on a cyclical view of both the physical and spiritual nature of the universe; it's basically like astrology, but deals with all life rather than individual people. As such, some people attribute particular significance to the calendar ending. These speculations range from apocalyptic to astronomical events, general changes of consciousness / evolution as a culture (end of an old era and beginning of a new), climatic events, and so on. Even among the superstitious, however, very few interpret it as any kind of apocalypse.
Ultimately people that attribute much spiritual or prophetic significance to the Mayan calendar tend to use it as a way to rationalize or justify some of their beliefs, but when it comes down to it it's really nothing more than the end of one culture's calendar. Prophetic or not, the calendar could only go on so long before it had to end. On the benign side of it there is always the possibility that there is some astronomical significance, but I doubt that it will have anything over modern science.
The Mayan calendar was/is surprisingly accurate (as a calendar) for a tribal society, but I wouldn't attach a lot of significance to the date that it ends. Even if you believe in such things you still have to admit that the end date could be entirely arbitrary. If you are the type that's inclined to believe in such things then you might want to simply read up on the subject but keep an open mind (including to modern science, since any information that science can offer will be the most trustworthy) and don't give anyone's conclusions too much credence; after all, it's all speculation until someone can provide verifiable evidence if not proof.
I actually have to amend my answer a bit as I forgot one thing - the Mayan calendar measures very long cycles. The ending does actually denote the end of one of these cycles, which is similar to our millenniums. This is also just like the astrological ages, and the way that astrology would explain the same thing is that we are entering the age of Aquarius (astrology just doesn't specify a specific date).
One actual correction that I have to make to my last post is that the calendar doesn't actually end, but instead starts over again. It's like the odometer on a car resetting to zero.
Hopefully that all makes sense. There's plenty of info on the internet about the subject.
