Disagree with ty on this one. That's a very common urban legend, but it's not grounded in fact.
In the early days of ship-to-ship Morse code, there were many, many different versions of a 'Help, ship in distress,' including 'NC,' 'CQD' and 'SSS DDD.' Most of these were developed simply because they were easy to rapidly tap out in Morse. When international regulations were later developed to standardize transmissions, 'SOS' was agreed upon as an international distress call. Like the others, it was chosen only because it was easy to remember and easy to rapidly transmit -- dot-dot-dot-dah-dah-dah-dot-dot-dot.
Now, 'SOS' is fairly synonymous with 'Help,' but the individual letters mean nothing.
