What do you think Mormons believe?

I would very much like to know what people out there think mormons believe. I would very much like to set straight any crazy ideas or accusations that people have.

Please Know I am not trying to convert anyone, but I would appreciate it if people would accept that I believe what I believe. So please don’t get on here just to tell me how wrong I am or that I’m going to hell. I’m just trying to set the record straight.

Answer #3

Are you just wanting to start another debate with that infoholic-nutbar?

Answer #4

hivetyrant what exactly was it that was incorrect about the “black relations” part?

Answer #5

—It’s a cult, started by a fraud Joseph Smith. Do the research and pray for God to open your eyes to the truth. Your salvation depends on it! Blessings, Christianwalk —

So much irony in that statement…

Well, I don’t think our Father encourages people to attack others, and I certainly don’t think that he encourages the blatant hatefulness expressed in this. I I personally believe that attacking something in ignorance condemns one further. BUT, that is not my right to judge. Assuming there is one, we shall see in the next life.

—There you go, vinni… you’re first ignorant student…—

Actually it’s ‘your’…

And his information is quite correct, with an exception in the Black relations department. That truth actually applies to most surviving Christian denominations aside from Catholicism and the Church of England. Most of them couldn’t have survived without moving to the Americas.

Answer #6

NO I’m not trying to start a debate. I just want people to be informed. I’ve just heard a lot of crazy misunderstandings along with many flat out lies. I promise that any questions asked will be answered honestly. I have no problem with someone hating mormons as long as they really know what they’re hating.

And to tseirpeht

“Why would after so many years would your religion finally come out?”

God has a plan. Specifically I’m not sure why so many years went by but I do know that several events had to take place, one of the most important being the birth of this great nation. God wanted to be sure that the gospel would survive so it was restored to a land where freedom of religion was engrained into the basis of the government.

“How is it that your religion teaches one thing in your book, but you preach another?”

If you could be more specific I would appreciate it.

“Why were blacks not allowed to preach in your faith until about 30 years ago?”

Blacks were actually allowed in the church, they were however not able to hold the priesthood until 1978. Long before that blacks had been baptized as members, preached from the pulpit and offered prayers in largely white congregations — none of which required the member to hold priesthood office.

1 WE BELIEVE in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

2 WE BELIEVE that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

3 WE BELIEVE that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

4 WE BELIEVE that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

5 WE BELIEVE that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6 WE BELIEVE in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

7 WE BELIEVE in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

8 WE BELIEVE the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

9 WE BELIEVE all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

10 WE BELIEVE in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

11 WE CLAIM the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

12 WE BELIEVE in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

13 WE BELIEVE in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Answer #9

I think you were insulting the fact that he was trying to defend a religion, and a Christian religion at that.

—Blacks were actually allowed in the church, they were however not able to hold the priesthood until 1978. Long before that blacks had been baptized as members, preached from the pulpit and offered prayers in largely white congregations — none of which required the member to hold priesthood office.—

Black relations.

Answer #10

Well… you’re wrong…

My comment was in response to ‘christianwalk’ ignorant statement (the comment RIGHT above mine). Vinni started this thread to educate people, and ‘christianwalk’ is in need of education.

…get it now?

Answer #11

Actually it’s ‘your’…And his information is quite correct, with an exception in the Black relations department.

He said nothing about ‘black relations’ …you missed the point…

Answer #12

There you go, vinni… you’re first ignorant student…

Answer #13

Are you asking a question or making a statement? Or just looking for an argument…what does it matter what people think you believe…it supposed to be about what YOU BELIEVE…not what they think you believe.

Answer #14

Okay I know what you mean, last year I had a boyfriend who was a mormen and I myself am a christian, I respected him for his decisions though, the belive that jesus was a profit but didnt die for our sins and that he was kinda like tthe deciple of this other guy who I forget the name, who had some vision of a new life, in this religion it is very strict and you cant leave the religion until you are of age eighteen and if you marry someone they ,ust become mormmen too, and you have to have over two children, there is proof that christianity is real so I dont get what is in theses peoples minds when they get themselves into something like that.

Answer #15

I would like to first start off by saying G-d bless you, if only the rest of the world had your compassion.

Why would after so many years would your religion finally come out?
How is it that your religion teaches one thing in your book, but you preach another?
Why were blacks not allowed to preach in your faith until about 30 years ago?
The Modern Mormons I have no doubt are very loving people, and have a genuine concern for their fellow neighbor. You no doubt have heard wolves in sheep’s clothing. This in my opinion is what it is, you preach kindness and love but underneath it all would lead us astray from what is the true G-d.

Answer #16

Mormons do not believe “in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father [the only-begotten; that is, of the essence of the Father, God of God], Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father;”

They believe when the nicene creed came about that was the great apostasy, and that it wasn’t until Joseph Smith was revealed the complete word of God written on Golden tablets which became what is today’s book of Mormon that the true church ever truly came back.

South Park actually showed I think pretty accurately how Mormonism came about. Although it did not go into their beliefs about Jesus not being very God from very God.

Answer #17

It’s a cult, started by a fraud Joseph Smith. Do the research and pray for God to open your eyes to the truth. Your salvation depends on it! Blessings, Christianwalk

Answer #18

And most people obviously don’t understand the LDS Church outside of what they see on anti-Mormon websites, or through anti-Mormon preachings from their pastors.v They don’t bother to investigate it themselves due to their closed mindedness. I have attended many other church’s meetings, and I think I can fairly say that I DO know what another church’s services are like. Some I enjoyed, some I’m indifferent to, others I hated. However, I entered into all of them with an open mindset, ready to consume all of the knowledge and information I could.

First off, Mormons DO believe that Jesus is the one and only savior. There is no question in this matter. In fact, there is no question in just about anything, part of the reason that I’m now what they call a Mormon Liberal. But I’ve observed this problem in MOST religions, not just Christian ones.

If anyone wants (relatively) unbiased information on the LDS Church and it’s beliefs, feel free to PM me. I’m not going to participate in any more of these pointless, one sided debates full of people trying to tell me what I or my compatriots believe.

And you want to bring racism to the table? Then every single American-Christian church is condemned. Well, maybe not Catholics. And funny thing is, there wasn’t a problem with racism in the church ORGANIZATION until two former Southern Baptists somehow manged to get into the Quorum of the Twelve. The first black Mormons were ordained to the Priesthood while Joseph Smith Junior was prophet, Elijah Able the first.
