Going down the interstate or something if a rock or something blunt hits, you wont see impact it will just crack the safety glass, happened to me in my ford ranger, luckily I have full coverage and got a free new windshield.

But yeah, anything blunt, or pressure from slamming doors too much can do it.
Sharp/pointy objects will leave a impact mark.

if a little peick of metal or a rock that was kicked up by a car hits the windscreen, then yea it could cause a chip.
Once my brother and I were driving to a ski place and a salt truck turnd up infront of us. unfortunatly, he decided to turn on the salt machins and salt went everywhere.
the next day, with a screaming dad, we discovered there was a little chip. Now, a year later, it has spread across the bottom of the screen and there is a huge crack.
TIP! don't drive behind a salt truck, even though it is clearing the snow for you, and DO NOT WAIT to get it fixed.
