ladydon07, you haven't told us what you are doing now for training.
Going faster relies on 3 things:
faster legs, more powerful and coordinated which you get from interval traing
more endurance which is gained by long hard training.
more drive, being able to run harder and suffer more. This mental toughness comes from learning to push yourself harder, the best way to do this is to run with someone faster than you and resolve not to get dropped; make staying with the stronger runner a mater of life and death.
during my senior year I was very dedicated. I trained over the summer, ran crosscountry and trained over the winter. by the time track came I was already in shape and ready to run, everyone else was out of shape. Just keep running over the winter and do some speed intervals at a track. this will help you with your speed. also run some distance. in order to run a fast mile you need to have SPEED+ENDURANCE. if you have speed you will be fast but you need the endurance to keep you going. if you have endurance you need the speed to lower your time. I was mostly a half miler, all through high school I ran about a 2:06, i knew I could be faster but I was afraid to go to fast and then hit a wall. during my senior year I had to concure that fear, usually I ran about a 1:02 first lap, I concured that fear of going out too fast and I went out at a 0:56 first lap well then I had the endurance to keep going and I ended up running a 1:56. and almost broke the school record. what im trying to say is go out faster in your first half and then have the endurance to maintane your speed. my mile time went from a 4:55 to a 4:34 because I went faster during the first half. usually when your running the mile the 2nd and 3rd lap are going to be the slowest. because you get comfortable and want to save something for the end of your race. run your race as if it was only three laps, then on the last one use whatever you have left. you will have something in you because mentally you know that you only have one lap to go and you will have some sort of drive to get you there.
im sorry I wrote so much but I kinda describe things with my own experience. I hope this helped you a little bit.
good luck with your mile and I hope that you can beat your school record.
