I'm not an expert on financial planning or advice, but as I understand it a government bond (sometimes referred to as treasury bill or t-bill) will give you a rate of return above a certificate of deposit, however, on average, lower than an investment bond, which in this context, I think refers to a private bond from a for profit enterprise.

The risk factor is higher with a private company than with a government bond, however, the average yeild for those that go up is also higher. If you're looking for a good balance in your portfolio, you might try a mix of t-bills as well as a bond index fund or similar. Make sure you find one where there are zero or close to zero fees, else potential profits will be much smaller than you expect after you factor in the cost of the investments.

Good luck.
