Weird potatos

Asked by fau 2 months ago, 5 answers.

I've grown some potatoes in my back garden and some of them have little berry-like things on them(the stems of the plant) they look like unripe cherry tomatoes... Is this normal and what are they?

Yes, it's normal, I think they are called sprouts. When peeling the potato, cut those things off and everything will be fine.

I think the posters above are talking about potato eyes, which do not occur on the stems.

You might have an insect problem. Scale insects burrow under the stem, form a shell, and feed on the sap, laying their eggs from within. Without pictures, it would be pretty hard to be sure, but if it is scale insects, here's a website regarding their control:

Potatoes are in the same family as tomatoes so that's why their fruit looks similar. Usually you dig up the potatoes before they make fruit though. I think the potato fruits are poisonous. In fact the stems are poisonous, the leaves are poisonous, and same for tomato stems and leaves. Can you blame people for being scared of tomatoes for so long?

You can save seeds from the berries if you want, letting you breed new potatoes. But most people use old potatoes to grow new ones, which basically clones them. That way someone else has already bred a potato for you, and it's a lot quicker easier too.
