I'm not sure I agree. 3 pounds a week is rather fast. This is ok if you're just starting, as most of the weight you lose initially will be water, and your body will be willing to lose more fat due to the sudden change in diet and exercise. But you cant consistantly lose 3 pounds or even 2 pounds per week on a regular basis like that. Your body can adapt to almost any stimulus, including that which is meant to cause fat loss, so you'll have to change it up eventually.
Anyway your question was how long, not how to. So in that case, I would be more realistic and say 40 pounds of pure fat, and not other forms of body weight, can be gone in around 40 weeks, if you were losing a pound a week. Plan on it taking a year, but you can also train and improve yourself in other ways during this time.
