Washing your child's mouth out with soap?

The Fiance and Me at a Luau Asked by mandyloo about 1 year ago, 15 answers.

I was watching something on T.V., and it has made me question and wonder about something...
What do y'all think about washing your childs mouth out with soap?
If you think its nessessary at times...when?
Is it cruel?

My mom put the liquid one in my mouth one time for saying the f word when I was younger, and believe me it worked. It's disgusting and I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth. I certainly learned my lesson though. That was more effective than the spanking...I think it is necessary but not if it's used often. My parents just gave me the taste of it and that was it..lol

I don't think it's cruel, many a foul mouth has been cleaned up - once usually enough.

I'd never do that and I never heard of anyone doing that in the last 40 years. My mom acted like it was common in her day though. She mentioned that deodorant soap tasted a lot worse than Ivory.

I do have a neighbor who keeps vinegar in a spray bottle and whenever their kids say bad things they have to have a spray of vinegar in their mouths. I disagree with this as well but it is probably healthier than soap.

I definitely got the bar of ivory in my mouth once or twice.
It didnt take too many times before I realized, dont yell at mom and dont say grown up words until you are a grown up.
I dont see it as cruel. I mean, unless you are using liquid soap or you are making the child EAT the soap, its not too bad. Soap is non-toxic, and the taste does go away.

I think its stupid
it was used because soap tastes horrible
however as ty said, its not safe to be swallowed
and it also dries up your mouth
disturbing saliva production

It was done to me and I agree with Amblessed, it cleans it up and you won't say it again, atleast in front of your parents. LOL

I personally say that's a No.
because I feel that it would not be safe to swallow.
therefore it doesn't need to go in your mouth.

if your kid says a bad word, find another way to deal.
