Art imitates life. Many see the human condition as crap. 2/3s of humanity life in hunger, squalor, and hopelessness. Even among the lucky 1/3 life isn't exactly a bowl of cherries. Much of life is a zero-sum game. We compete for jobs, money, mates, etc. We only succeed by making someone else loose and when someone else succeeds we loose. Life itself is competition, Life is a single tight thread that can snap at any moment; we can be the victim of anything from a violent thug to a virilent microbe.
Vulgar music is an outlet for humaniity's collective angst.
Of course not everything in life is a zero-sum game. There is no limit to the amount of love, beauty, creativity or imagination you have in life; you can have all that you want without depriving anyone else. This is why life doesn't completely suck.
My life philosophy is that if you devote your life to the things that are zero-sum like money, success and power that you will never find fulfillment. If you dedicate your life to more sublime persuits like truth, beauty and justice than your life will be abumdant. Even those with a positive outlook sometimes have to reflect on the pain of life and for those times vulgar music fills that need.
I always enjoyed the gentle humor of Red Skeleton, Bob Hope, Garrison Keeler, etc. The thing is that these individuals never dealt with anything negative. They expressed certain things but not others.
One of my favorite composers, Richard Wagner was considered extremely vulgar in his day. Indeed he wrote some of the ugliest music of the Romantic era but he also wrote some of the most beautiful. I think of how much less rich our music and lives would be if Wagner's critics were able to stop his music.
