Just go by his interests or anything that he might like. Definitly not candy. I really do believe that candy is the worst gift even if it is for Valentine's Day. It's just a big no. Truly, I know it sounds kind of selfish but I've always thought of Valentine's Day as a 'woman's holiday.' I mean think about it, the colors are feminine and what do you see in stores for men on Valentine's Day? ...Yeah, exactly nothing. So I wouldn't worry so much about getting him something if you really can't find anything.
