It doesn't hurt, they spread some jelly on the part of your body they are doing the ultrasound on and then press a big sonar stick on you to scan it, then it shows up right on the screen. I had one done on my chest when they were checking my heart for holes in it because I had a heart murmur. Sometimes they have to press the rod into you a little bit hard but not enough to leave a bruise or anything just a little bit of mild discomfort.
