Dear softwalk47,
My favorite line is what amblessed said children learn what they live and if they have seen any type of abuse such as slapping or throwing things they will no doubt pick this up. Children are born with a very clean slate and as parents we are responsible for what is written on that slate. If the child attempts to slap you in the face gently stop their hand and tell them no. They are too young at this age to understand reason but they do know the word no and perhaps put a little sad look on your face and say that makes me sad. This must be done every time the child tries to slap.
Sue...good luck
It depends on the child..I've seen well mannered parents with horribly mannered children, and vice versa. A lot of times it's what the child has seen, but many other times the child just has a mean streak for no reason. Yes, that is true no matter what people tell you. Some children just have a mind of their own. That child needs to be disciplined (not hit) and fast.
Hi, my husband and I are non-violent. COmpletely. I have no idea where he gets it from and we are trying to figure out both the source and the solution. He has never been hit, not once. but he has taken to smacking on the head. When he knocks his head on something, we both yell, OW! and he thinks it is funny instead of crying, so maybe this is where he gets it. he wants to thump me on the head so I yell OW! and we both laugh. not sure... but it has become a problem, and I have no idea how to deal with it. Now I just hold his hand, say NO! firmly and walk away. He has no mean streak he is just a funny outgoing kid who loves theatrics and people reactions (he loves jumping on a trampoline, almost falling, catching himself, being boo-ed when he comes around the corner, peekaboo, hand clapping. Just a sweet normal kid, but likes to smack on the head...then he comforts you if you cry... go figure.
I have a very similar problem to mbvanwees with this issue. My husband and I never hit and our 1 year old will smack us and anyone else holding him in the face when he is excited. He is not doing it in a mean way, he is just really excited and this is how he is showing it. He is a very sweet, happy kid, but the older he gets the harder the smack is and it is not pleasant. We have been putting him down right away with a very firm No, that hurts! but he doesn't seem to get it and the face smacking hasn't stopped. I'm open to any suggestions!
Hi, my 15 month old slaps me in the face a lot, it is very upsetting as it is mainly me that is on the receiving end. I just say NO! very firmly and try to look sad. I tell her that it isn't nice and it makes mummy cry. She will stop then but tends to start crying too. The other thing I have started doing is putting her straight down when she does it, so that she no longer gets a cuddle. If she calms down I will cuddle her again, but if she slaps she goes straight back down and I will not pick her up. Hopefully she will learn from this.
