How can I improve my players in madden 07?

I'm playin madden 07 on the PS2 and I can never get my players overall better in franchise mode. I can have a runnin back with almost 2000 rushing yards and a QB with over 4000 passing yards with like 30 TD's and 10 INT's. After the season their overall still drops lol. Now I can't get good trades when I try to trade players because they not valuable. Am I missing something here? Somebody help me!

I found this on a review for the game:

The franchise mode is great. The game sets goals for you to reach each week and if you accomplish those goals then you're rewarded with points you can distribute amongst your players each week, constantly improving your team as you move through the season. Thanks to this feature, your rookies can develop faster as the season moves along.

So I'd naturally have to ask, are you meeting the goals the game sets for you? If you are, their overalls should improve.
