How come the sun makes our hair lighter, but our skin darker?

It fades the pigments in your hair. (Hair is not living material, and can't react like the living cells in the skin), which react to the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun by increasing the amount of melanin in the skin cells, and thus giving you a tan.
