The da vinci code

I went to a Catholic school when I was younger, (all three of my siblings did as well) until my younger sister was born, and then we moved to another school. I can honestly say, I don't know much about the bible or anything! I also went to sunday school,...

but I don't think I paid attention. All I remember is watching religious vegietail (SP?) movies and painting. Anyway, I recently read 'The Da Vinci code' and it was a REALLLY good book. But, my brother told me not to believe what I read. So, what about the bible? Should you believe in that? And what do you call a person who believes in god, jesus, mary, and all that but doesn't believe a thing about the bible?

To me, it's simple: Either you believe the Bible is the true inspired, infallable word of God (cover to cover) or you don't - your choice to accept or reject - no gray area - it's called 'Faith'...hope this helps !!

You should believe whatever has the most and best supporting evidence. In this case, I feel neither book has anything going for it.

No. It's just the ramblings of superstitious ancient men. They were more ignorant and less capable of complex thought than us, not smarter.

Well, I think the DaVinci Code was an entertaining book but had no basis in fact - the author copied (and was sued for copying) the ideas from a book written in the 1980s, which had all the Mary Magdalen/Jesus stuff in it. That earlier book was a 'non-fiction' best seller, but most people believed it was pretty made up, even if it wasn't in the fiction section!

I am a Christian so I do believe in the Bible (and I like Veggietales!). I think you should find out more for yourself - never simply believe people who tell you the Bible is 'all true' or 'all false' - instead, do some decent reasearch for yourself. One of the easiest ways could be to find a group of teens who are studying the Bible in a 'beginners' class' sort of way - an introduction. Otherwise, you could read one of the Gospels - Mark is my favourite because it's the shortest and easiest to get thorough!

The other thing is to pray a short prayer: 'God, if you are real, please let me find out about you'. God will help out when you ask!

Really? When's the last time you stoned an adulterer, amblessed? I presume you also avoid eating any hooved animals, stone anyone who works on the sabbath, and so on.

Also, what about the mutually contradictory parts of the bible? Are they both right?

I believe in the bible, abut I believe the DaVinci code is hogwash. It was a great read, but clearly the evidence to support the theories just wasn't there.

Man, sometimes people can be really rude to those who are searching for truth. To you really think you are going to persuade them to see it your way by being mean?

Anyone who truly thinks it's infallible should follow its directions unfailingly, right? Including all the ones we'd find socially unacceptable today. If, like most (all?) christians, you believe the bible isn't all literal and infallible, you're applying your own interpretation, and can no longer claim to simply follow the bible in all respects.

Except that you completely forget that for Christians the rules we follow are the rules of Jesus, not of Moses.

torikeene: Are you suggesting the old testament is _wrong_? Amblessed's statement was that the bible - the whole bible - is infallible. Not to mention, christians have no trouble using old testament rules when they want to - witness quoting of the old testament when denying homosexuality, or the many references to the ten commandments.

Jesus Christ is easily the most important figure that has ever appeared in the history of mankind. It makes no difference how you regard him, you will have to concede that.

Actually, there's very little historical evidence outside the bible for the _existence_ of Jesus. I don't doubt that the depiction of Jesus in the bible has made him one of the most significant figures in history, but there's real doubt if he is a real or a fictional person.

Depends, pay close attention to what you see in the bible, it's not as holly as people think, lol. It all depends. I heard suposedly the code was about the secrete life of Jesus. Look in the paintings, The last supper shows a women sitting to the right of Jesus. Supposedly it reveals the Holly grial to be the secret blood line of Christe. Try looking up the alternative documents of Jesus such as The Book of Enoch, Jubilees, Gospel of Necodemas, Nostic Texts, Gospel of Christe from Thomas
It tells you more about the bible, they were all band from the bible as well. Funny though, the dead sea scrolls were orinally band from the bible as well, lol.
