I didn't know anything about this method until I looked it up after reading your question. And the website I was looking at broke it down pretty well, but to be honest, I wouldn't trust it to help prevent pregnancy. Especially since you've just given birth. Your hormones are going to be changing a lot in the next year to get back to normal. And relying on what the mucus looks like may not be that accurate as of now. And personally, I myself, wouldn't want to keep that close of an eye on the mucus in my cervix! lol

The Fertility Awareness Method is explained in detail in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and can be used when breastfeeding as the natural form of knowing when you ovulate so that you can either abstain or use a barrier during those days (5-10 days of fertile fluid). I use it while breastfeeding and even though boyfriend does mix up my hormones, I can still tell when I'm fertile and when I'm about to get my period. Checking your cervical position and waking temperature as well as the cervical mucus are the 3 most important parts of tracking your cycles. It does take time to learn what your own body does but if you are breastfeeding then there is a slim chance you are going to get pregnant in the first few months of practice anyway. It takes time for your body to ovulate when you breastfeed because of the hormones your body produces to make the milk and in the first 6 months it's easy to not get preggo.
