Strumming without a pick (guitar)

How do you strum a guitar without a pick? Is there a certain correct technique to it? I've been using my thumb on the downstokes and my four other fingers on the upstrokes. It's kind of slow to do, I'm wondering what better way there is? Thanks.

u should use your fingers to strum up and doen b/c it will take longer to do with your thumb, but there isn't a correct way to strum you can come up w/ your own way or style to do it. for example when Dave Grohl played drums for Nirvana he used paint brushes as drum sticks...it's not right or wrong. When I play Wonderwall on guitar by Oasis I use a thick folded up piece of construction paper as a pick or a piece of an old credit card b/c I can't srum w/ my fingers for that song nor can I use a pick b/c it's too thick even tho I only use .50mm pick it still sounds too loud when I use a pick and b/c of the strum pattern I can't use my fingers it just doesn't work for me, but useing paper makes it sound soft like it should for that particular song. So bottom line there is no right or wrong way to play there's your way an there's other peoples way which might not work for u...:P
