Sit ups are great but whatever you chose to do make sure you are careful with your back and support it as much as possible. Doing sit ups on an exercise ball relieves some of the stress on your back.
Other things you can do are waist twists which is where you flex your abdominal muscles and twist from your waist back and forth. You can also do leg raises. One thing I do with my kids is let them sit on my leg and they think it's fun when I try and lift them (just be careful with them). Also when they are sitting on my legs I do sit ups and pretend I am about to give them a kiss and then I lay back down again without doing so which they think is great fun.
