It helps to control animal population and prevents more strays from being born just to get hit by a car.

I think emotionalxoxomcr got the big answer. And also to reduce the risk of some health issues. Unwanted puppies, Animal population, Animal Abuse,Behaviour issues, Marking territory, aggression, I mean you can tie a whole bunch into this little itty bitty question.

for a male dog it helps them calm down (a lot), curves their urge to hump everything and calm any aggresion, and if your not breeding them they can have health problem if not neutered. plus you can rest at ease if you dog happens to run of hes not going to get anyother dog up the duff.
with females its best to get them spayed for health reasons as well and also to protect your dog, not everyone gets their dogs done so your dog could get jumped so to speak... this would lead to unwanted puppies sad. plus your dog wont have periods any more.

My list for neutering and spaying is so long it probably wouldn't fit here!!!

I'm with you, Utopia...On my regular dog groups, spaying/neutering is simply a part of getting a new dog...My eyes have been opened here, when every damn week I'd swear there are 100 litters of puppies being delievered (ignorantly), or conceived (just as ignorantly)...
