I have alot of experience in singing, and I honestly don't know how I aquired singing properly but it always came easy to me. But for others, I know it isn't always easy.

One of the main exercises I always did to make sure I was singing from my diaphragm and to keep it strong was using books.

Get a big book(phone book, big text book ect..) and practice singing while lying on the floor with the book on your stomach. When that becomes easy, add additional books on top. If the books don't rise then you're not doing it right. This exercise will strengthen your muscles as well as getting you used to feeling and knowing when you are using your diaphragm.

Babies can cry and scream so loud because they use their diaphragms. Your body also instinctively uses it's diaphragm rather than the chest to breath when you are lying on your back. (and they were right, singing from the diaphragm has nothing to do with gender.)

I learned how to breathe from my diaphragm back when I was in college. At the time, I joked about it — telling my friends even though I had lived that long, I still didn't know how to breathe!

The director of the choir taught us how to do it. (I think this is something easier to teach in person, but I'll try.)

We were told to put our hands on our stomachs and pant like a dog. If you do it right, your breathing will not be controlled by the upper chest muscles. You should feel the movement with your hands on your stomach. With the panting, your stomach moves out when you breathe in, and moves in when you breathe out. This approach helped me to isolate my diaphragm. You also use your diaphragm when you cough, but that's just exhaling. The panting showed me me to use it when I inhaled, too.

Of course, you can't be panting or coughing and sing properly. However, this method helped me to know when I was using my diaphragm. I hope it helps you, too.

Men sing from their diaphragms the same way women do. The diaphragm is the muscle system inbetween the lungs and the abdomen. To practice controling your diaphragm for singing, tighten your abdonminal muscles and exhale completely. Then relax your abdominal muscles. Air will rush into your lungs. If you are breathing properly, your chest will not rise and fall when you are breathing, rather your stomach will.
