put it to sleep on its back
put it to sleep in a crib (not a sofa or with other kids/adults)
put the crib in the same room as the parent
no soft bedding material
make sure room isnt too hot
let baby sleep with pacifier
dont give it honey
not exactly PREVENT, but the measures you could take would be to check on the infant every 5-15 minutes and to not put heavy blankets or stuffed animals into the crib/playpen. also, no mattress. hope it helps!
If there is a valid medical reason for you to fear SIDS then there is a monitor that you can get and put on your baby. It will sound any time the baby quits breathing. I had a friend that had a baby die of SIDS and they put her next one on the monitor the day he was born.
