Should japan be allowed to continue slaughtering whales?

samurai Asked by legion about 1 year ago, 22 answers.

Should Japan, or any country for that matter, be allowed to continue harpooning Whales for 'so-called' scientific research? Japan will continue to slaughter thousands of Whales over the next few months, including the majestic Hump back Whale, which...

hasn't been hunted since the ban in the 60's.

I'm not really sure why they shouldn't be.
I mean, if it's wrong to hunt whales, why isn't it wrong to kill cows or chickens?

Cows Chickens aren't endangered.

Your question is pretty skewed.

Very little Japanese actually eat Whale meat. Japan is killing thousands more whales for so called scientific reasearch than ANY other country. It's the fact that they are increasing the Whale hunt, and that Whales are endangered (like the Humpback) that it is an issue. But since you don't care...LETS JUST KILL THEM ALL EH?!!!

...whatever.

No, they should not. There are 'scientific' and 'cultural' justifications made for whaling by Japan and some other countries which traditionally killed whales. However, these justifications do not stand up against the scientific evidence that whales are at risk of extinction, or the practical fact that there are now many alternatives to the products formerly made from the bodies of whales.

The link has been removed now, which is a pitty...maybe whoever removed it supports the Whale slaughter? Greenpeace web site has information if anyone is interested in taking similar action to stop the slaughter

Absolutely not.
I'm not one of those crazy save the whales! girls...
but I do have respect for animals, and I do have respect for nature..
because its most beautiful and pure when its just left alone by people.
Maybe someday when people understand this, and start acting upon it,
the earth would be healthier again, and so will everyone living in it.

Your question is pretty skewed.

First of all, Japan is not the only nation that allows its people to hunt whales. Canada, some Carribean nations, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Indonesia, Russia, and the United States all have citizens or native groups that participate in whale hunting. Why is Japan singled out if no one accepts cultural traditions as a reason to allow whale hunting? Why does no one get vocal about Inuit whale hunters in North America or Lamalera in Indonesia?

Second, if you're sending messages to the Prime Minister of Japan, you're going after the wrong guy. Japan's whale hunting for scientific research is permitted by the IWC, the International Whaling Commission. The Japanese government makes a good point when they argue that such hunts are sanctioned.

Third, regardless of whether you think it's a bogus excuse, whale hunting is a traditional part of Japanese sea life and whale products are heavily used in Japanese society. To be perfectly honest, if I were in Japan's government, I would see no reason to listen to a bunch of sniveling countries like the US and Australia over something like this, two countries whose environmental track record is less than sterling.

It doesn't really matter whether I care or not. The IWC clearly doesn't care because they SANCTION JAPANESE WHALE HUNTING!!!

What is your position on the issue anyway? Do you oppose all whale hunting, or whale hunting for scientific research by Japan only, or what?

What bothers me is when people try to drum up support for a cause without ever looking into all angles of the issue.

THE WHALING NEEDS TO STOP ITS BARBARIC AND THE WHALERS ARE HOLDING PEOPLE HOSTAGE, THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PUT A STOP TO IT KNOW BEFORE ALL HELL BRAKES LOSE BECAUSE WE AUSTRALIANS ARE PRETTY PISSED OF THAT TWO AUSSIES ARE BEING HELD HOSTAGE
