You need to talk to your doctor. Think of children with autism as having a different language and having a different way of viewing the world. It is always hard to understand people who are different, and why they do, say or act in ways that are unfamiliar... I can only imagine how hard it is not being able to feel like you understand your own child... But know that he is functioning the way he knows how... If his doctor says it is fine, then it is probably fine...

If it soothes him, then let him have it.

You have to remember that he's not quite like the average 16 year old - he has needs that require a lot of attention.

Those things are familiar to him, and it's important that you don't make big changes...he can't deal with that.

myadvice - he's 16 and *autistic*, perhaps you missed that part, or perhaps you don't understand what autism is.

It may help you to do a little research.

if he has had it for 16 years, then taking it away would be a huge shock...even if your son wasn't autistic.

If that's what soothes him and makes him less restless then absoloutly don't take it from him. Autistic children don't function like we do, so therefore if it soothes him, just let him have it until the doctor says it may cause a problem, and if you insist on trying to get him off of it ask the doctor hat you could possibly give him to replace the bottle and pacifier

I'm sure she has done some research on autism if her son has had it for 16 years. To insinuate she doesn't care enough to do research on his condition is absurd, in my opinion.

All the research in the world cannot predict how your son will react. I would suggest a behaviorist or someone who specializes in autism giving an expert opinion -- not just a general doctor.
